El genio alemán fue, posiblemente, el más grande fotógrafo de moda de la historia del género. Algunas de sus fotografías son auténticos iconos de este arte, especialmente 'The Mainbocher corset' (una de las composiciones más imitadas y homenajeadas por propios y extraños) o la portada que hizo para la revista 'Vogue' con la modelo sueca Lisa Fonssagrives conformando con su cuerpo las letras del magazine.
